René Lacerte is a technology entrepreneur and the CEO and founder of BILL, a leader in financial operations for small and midsize businesses (SMBs). At BILL, he works with some of the nation’s largest banks and accounting firms to redefine how financial operations are automated.
René founded BILL in 2006 after recognizing that business owners needed a way to simplify payments so they could focus on their business. BILL became a publicly traded company in 2019. BILL acquired Divvy and Invoice2Go in 2021, and Finmark in 2022. Headquartered in San Jose California, today the company has over 2,500 employees, and offices in Draper, Utah, Houston, Texas, and Sydney, Australia. René’s vision for the future of finance is shaping the industry, with an ultimate goal to make a positive impact for SMBs and help them thrive.
He is a fourth-generation entrepreneur and has over 30 years of experience in the finance, software, and payments industries. Prior to BILL, René founded PayCycle, the first and largest online payroll solution which was acquired by Intuit in 2009. Early in his career, he spent five years at Intuit, growing its bill payment and credit card businesses and launching Intuit’s first connected payroll product.
René was an E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year national finalist and the Northern California winner in 2017. For ten years in a row he has been named one of the 100 most influential people in the accounting industry by Accounting Today. He is a graduate of Stanford University, where he received an M.S. in industrial engineering and a B.A. in quantitative economics.
